Sing Me Songs of Pasta, Deary by marcyintellect Sing Me Songs of Pasta, Deary by marcyintellect
THIS IS A COMMISSION.

let me say it again. THIS IS A COMMISSION. so therefore you need to critique it differently - this girl's mama paid me to do about 5 (actually it ended up being 7 but I didnt mind) "artsy" portraits/shoots of her daughter... eventually they will all be in [link] ...

this girl is the best irish dancer in the midwest, 2nd in the country, 5th in the world. only got beat in nationals because someone imported an irish girl.

her mother is a weaver ... and this is a leather sculpture she made while studying at the art institute. pasta and brains, pasta and the bumps trees get when they are sick.

this is one of my favorite commissioned pictures so far... even though i was getting paid and abstractly what to do, i was actually allowed to be create for once. haha. though, i am doing a huge family portrait...anyway i want... on friday, so that will be interesting.

whether or not I leave this up will be based on whether or not some people here can keep in mind that this is a commission.

in the mean time, pretend to be excited that my book is coming out soon, and pretend to be excited (moreso) and go buy a picture from me for someone for christmas. who needs a bit of marcys scary imagination on their wall? someone does. [link] go. or at least pretend to go.

might it look better with a vibrant coloured background? irish green, white...
or doing something with a pasta source idea.
it does look great it just seems incomplete to me

well actually... since its a commission and really supposed to be focusing on her and the creation of her mothers...thats why i used a simple backdrop. im not big on varying colored backdrops unless really necessary, either.

i understand where you were going with the porcelain doll idea. it's also really neat because the lips look geisha-ish, but then she has such pale, freckley, irish skin that it contrasts really cool. i like it a lot! the headdress is really unique.

i like the idea, quite expressive. kinda reads to me as "food on the mind" as an image. the centeredness and void of the space really gives the piece some impact.

are you studying at the art institute? im seriously considering it, I was just curious about the photo facilities and faculty. school looked nice from the tour.

i dont study there, I just take classes there.... the facilities are quite nice but its so fine-art based and 'ooooh we go to art school!' (the students).... so many of the kids just have money but suck. haha. some of the teachers are good, though.

highly original as always.

the black background definitely creates some amazing contrast with that head piece, which i personally think suits the photo well-- some extreme punch.

your creativity never ceases to floor me.

there's too much contrast in colors and textures with her skin and the pasta. I think somemore color or some dramatic shadows would look better. but what do i know, ive never even taken a picture before (seriously). but the hair looks great and so does the lips and pose.

I like the "wig" and the fact that there's a bit of space to just let one eye peep :D very nice, about the shot, she's very paled skin, blushy cheeks (Irish) I like the lipstick and the way it's placed, nice touch.
You made a very nice portrait shot here and I'm sure the mom will be satisfied with it, and so will the girl, I like it :)

Steve:sun:

just watched the others, I must say mallory does look good with wig's and helmets on :) I like the wig3 the least, but the thena's are also cool, according to me you uploaded the best shot anyway. I know it's hard to do commision shots since you can't really do what you think will fit her best or you're not as free as you could do whatever you wanted, but you did a great job

actually i do 1-5 commissions a week now, varying from headshots to family portraits to art portraits... im doing my organic chem teacher's family portrait on saturday...its really kind of fun, actually. i do commercial work too... so now I am close to being able to pay back my dad for all my lighting equipment and to buy eeeeeveryone nice xmas presents maybe....haha.... but actually, im going to toronto and scotland so i guess I should save money to pay back for those trips before buying everyone presents :(

the scotland trip is $4500 - but at least i get to perform at the edinburgh fringe festival!

a photo doesn't get critiqued differnetly because of the client... regardless... i think i'ts just a personal thing, but i dont like black backgrounds in colour.

i think if its a real client, as in a company client than you can critique it differently even than a commission - i dont put as much effort into a commission because some of the goals are different.
